Anthony Kiedis Discusses John Frusciante’s Struggles With Fame

“It should have been impossibly difficult, but it was as easy as could be. There was something about him that transcended being a typical fan, because he was a fan of many other musicians as well, we weren’t his primary focus. We were one of several bands and musicians that sparked his imagination in a big way that he had studied, but he had done the same with Frank Zappa and tons of others. The longer I knew him, the more I came to know how deep his wealth of knowledge about music was. He wasn’t alive long enough to learn all that stuff, but he learned it. The transition was we were very obnoxious individuals at that point in our life, just brash, young, stupid, rude, and self-centered.
We were crass little bastards to be honest, later we grew up, and thank goodness people didn’t write us off at that point. But he made it easy, he made it fun, he was such a student of music and arrangements. I just needed to show him the tiniest idea of a song, like I’ve got this verse, I’ve got this little melody, and he’d be like, ‘Great, come in the backyard and let’s finish it.’ Somehow that barrier of him being a fan of the band didn’t exist, it washed away the second we shook hands and went and played.”
“He was young, and beautiful, and talented, and suddenly had a few bucks in his pocket. I think that level of adoration is just difficult for human beings, I don’t think anybody receives a disproportionate amount of adoration and handles it gracefully. It’s awkward, you become too full of yourself, too egotistical, too self-centered, because everybody is flushing you with this attention. There’s no way anybody handles that well. Some people end up dying because of it, like child actors, ‘You’re the greatest thing ever. Oh – you went through puberty, next.’ That’s a hard thing to go through, and I think it was hard for John, I think it affected him in a rough way.
I don’t think he was built for that so much, so things got weird and changed quickly. We did a lot in a short amount of time, and it evaporated quickly, then he came back and we did a lot more. But as far as him being a fan, and us being the band, we were clearly meant to play music together, and to write songs together, and have the weird chaotic experiences that we had. I’ll always be grateful and consider myself so lucky to have met that other person that I can sit down and write music with so effortlessly.”

John Frusciante Biography - Part 1 Frusciante's family

The guys from Universo Frusciante did an amazing job to make this biography of John Frusciante crafted from stories, facts and quotes from interviews and testimonials.  And I will just to bring it to you in English.
"John takes all its decisions, has a very great determination and always live the life he wants to live." - Toni Oswald

Frusciante's Family

Frusciante's family lived in the region of Naples in Italy. More precisely in the small town of Benevento in Campania, located in southern Italy.

With World War slowly destroying Europe, many families began to migrate to other continents, as a way to protect yourself and have peace. Generous Frusciante (John's grandfather) did not think differently. But he thought differently in a different way.Contrary to what they considered correct, the Italian left wife and children and went alone to the U.S. with only a suitcase to escape the war, and at the same time building a new family and succeed in life. Arriving in the U.S., Generoso made his way to New York, where things actually happening in the country at that time. There was a new family and a son named John Frusciante, John's father.

John's father, inspired by the love of his family for music, played piano and studied at the Juilliard School of Music, one of the largest music schools in the world, located in Manhattan. But over the years, John, was getting interested in the law and ended up leaving school to pursue his new career interest. This would eventually make him become one of the most respected judges in Florida in the future.

John met Gail, a woman who sang in choirs religious and had a beautiful voice. The two married and went to live in Queens, still in New York. There was born the couple's son, John Anthony Frusciante, on March 5, 1970, the same day of classical music.
Music has always surrounded him since the beginning ...
John was a very smart child and creative. His family gave him his first guitar when he was 6 years old, so John, influenced by hearing his grandfather playing Italian music folks, having started learning guitar lesson.

Shortly after his parents moved to Tucson in Arizona, and then to Broward County, Florida. Father John entered the court premises and Gail kept thinking of becoming a great singer, but her husband wanted a housewife living with him and not a successful singer. These and other factors have made John and Gail split up a year later they went to Florida in 1977.

As there was no weather for both live in the same house, Gail decides to move to California and take the small Frusciante along with it. John's father continued investing in Florida in his judicial career. After that John's father remarried and had 3 more children, Michael, Anne and Lilly.
Gail recently arrived in California, will live in Santa Monica, near Los Angeles. There Lawrence Berkley knows a martial artist, lover of philosophy and classical music listener and R & B '50s. Gail is married to Lawrence in 1979 and the couple will live in Mar Vista neighborhood, had a son, Erik. The new stepfather John definitely put him in the music world.

John considered him a good person to live while I was growing up. John once said, "He really supported me and made me feel good about being an artist."
"My stepfather, Lawrence, was a very good guy to have around while I was growing up. At school, the every day there were new complaints about me - with my colleagues, with teachers. With my colleagues, because I was amused with things they did not like and had never heard of, like King Crimson. With teachers, was when they would not let me make a dissertção about the book [The Anti-Christ Nietzsche]. Lawrence and I always discussed these things when I came home, and he always made me feel like I was right. I had someone who believed in him in me. This means a lot to you, when you're a child ... Having an adult who really believe in you and sees something in you

I remember a teacher Amed Hughes, from my school. He was responsible for holding the class of a suspension, and the kids loved him or hated him. He was very funny, but also very hard. Once you know, you also begin to realize how funny was its rigor. When I was in eighth grade, he had the prettiest girl in the class come get me in another class, to go talk to him - usually when he did, you knew you were in trouble. When I got to his room, he said: "John, I want you to sit down and write a letter explaining what you think about me as a teacher, and sign it, so when you're famous, I can show my students . " It made me feel good. I always knew I was going to a life where I would be a musician, but nobody believed me. Maybe other people believed, once they began to hear me, but not now, for sure. Mr. Hughes was saying that based on nothing but my attitude towards music, he saw in my eyes. I really enjoyed it. John Frusciante's new Billboard interview "He's done with rock band"

You can read the full interview in http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5657748/john-frusciante-qa-on-his-electronic-evolution-and-why-hes-done-with-rock

About his long solos:
Especially in the case of this one, it reflects the music, you know? I mean, any guitar solo should reflect the music that it’s soloing over and not just be existing in its own sort of little world. But that’s what a lot of people who in the Seventies played extended solos, they would just kind of get lost in their own world, and so they became what I would consider to be a kind of a lazy area for guitar players.

About his leaving from Red Hot:
"it didn’t really occur to me to quit until Flea came to me at one point and said, “I want to take a two-year break after this tour.” And he said that to me about halfway through the [2007 “Stadium Arcadium”] tour, and when he said it I was kind of shocked, 'cause I thought we were on a roll, let’s just keep moving with this, you know? But once he said it to me, my mind started thinking, "What would I do with that two years if I had two years to just do whatever I wanted?"

About a possible live presentation:
No, I have no interest in playing live. I really don’t think of myself as a performer anymore. It was never something that came naturally to me. It was something that I adapted to, but it was never really an expression of who I was."

John Frusciante New Interview August 2013

John Frusciante did a interview for a japanese site, I roughly (by using software) translate it to English:

I had not become familiar with the 202, it was found that what someone can invent a melody like you've never came up until now. As a musician, I was aware that we are repeating the same pattern.

Comparing the electronic music and pop music, pop music is close to Mozart, electronic music I'm close to Beethoven. There in front of musical elements is the focus of one, other factors rather than being made to the foundation, various elements'm intertwined at the same time. In other words, I have a number of factors that can at the same time become the focus. In electronic music, drum if many has become the focus, but vocal'm a central element in the lock.

So you want to self-expression among the electronic music, we have to approach in a different way at all melody.

I began playing jazz as a child. I did not understand jazz at that time, but that's why I wanted to learn. Because it was a different music and thinking of me, I wanted to learn. I began to study the music John Coltrane and Miles Davis from there. And I was able to learn a new way of thinking. In life, I'm continuing the process. I thought the fact that you step into the world of electronic music, and learn a new approach. That it is surrounded by a variety of equipment, and programming each, press the play button of the equipment of one, it is played all equipment is synchronized, it was fresh for me. It was possible to leave the sensation was very free feeling, and it is only one component of the overall picture myself. It was found to able to produce an overall picture yourself alone. Instead of the players only, I could be a composer. To play the guitar as a member of the band often limit. When you write songs as a guitarist of the band, and I just have provided a blueprint. When you make an electronic music, it is possible to address the creative process is not affiliated with the songwriting traditional. Then, it is possible to build up the songs starting from an abstract concept.

Moreover, their controls it all, I can handle directly the sound itself. Rather than simply playing by changing the pitch of the instrument, it is possible that changes the sound itself, to create a harmony tone. The band, the only hope that the pitch that you have to play an instrument, other musicians us produce harmony. When you play in a band, there is no choice but to play along with drummer, but it is possible to control the rhythm very dense in electronic music. In the band, we have to play by observing the drummer, and here also have to drop the speed I also increase the speed of playing drummer when you speed up, drummer've cut the speed. Drummer I made to have a very power band, but drummer from'm not writing songs, I think there's up to with musical power and funny. When making electronic music alone, their also a drummer can make all parts and it is possible to process the sound.

Engineers worry of whether'll make the sound of his ideal is eliminated. Making electronic music is, I'm meant to be free musically for me. If further and say, rock music I'm a electronic music essentially. Category of the genre, many do not have a sense theoretical in reality. For example, genre of alternative rock'm funny. I do a lock just. Can not understand or gave such a name why (laughs). And I just had the form of a logical evolution of the lock. Alternative Rock, a translation was (another possibility) Alternative to lock earlier, but even what type of music, I'm an alternative to the music of the past (laughs).

Making electronic music is, I'm meant to be free musically for me Some people are regarded as completely different and rock electronic music, but if there are no people who are making the circuit board, rock music does not exist. Well, because of that reason does not exist without amplifier, pickup, recording equipment, sound systems, rock music, I'm dependent on electronics. As a result of making electronic music for many years, we studied the electronic music, I began to listen to rock music in a completely different approach. If you listen to rock music, the nature of the room, which was recorded and method of engineers began to listen to these days. I was made to listen as well as or through the amplifier how it sounds and original instruments.

In that sense, rock music I'm a one with electronic music. The side of the lock inside of me is, I is integrated with aspects of electronic music gradually. For example, rock song that contains the "PBX", but is produced in approach, such as jungle and electronic music abstract. I never imagined it Being able to tune in that method. When you are learning how to make electronic music, I did not even think that. Now, that there are no sense of working among the one genre. It is a combination of music of all styles, and any musical elements among their own can also be incorporated freely.

Musical elements of their own 20 years ago, musical elements of their ten years ago I incorporated. I do not have gap between the music and me. The rock band and orchestra, there is always some sort of wall between the musicians and music. For example, composer also composed the work, can have conductor, orchestra if there is, there may be problems circumstantial to grant the wish of their own. In electronic music, composer is released completely. In order to realize a sound heard among his head, to be dependent on others, such because I completely lost. And it is possible to listen to music while making in real time.

There is no need to do not have to show you from writing songs for the band, and wait to be finished or in what kind of sound the band to play actually. And act to create, act of listening because occur at the same time, it's got to mean the freedom of the best for me. I at making electronic music is, is the most free music, and I'm such because it is the most complete approach to making music.

John Frusciante might play on Coachella 2013

Before Saturday's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival performances, audience members gave some thoughts on who they wanted to see and musician rumors they heard about performing including electronic music's Daft Punk, hip-hop's Kanye West and rock guitarist John Frusciante.
Ian Deborja, 24, of San Francisco said he had heard with "80 percent" certainty that Daft Punk would perform with Phoenix during its set tonight on the main Coachella Stage, especially after a commercial was shown at the festival last night with Daft Punk.Deborja added he had "heard" Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers previous guitarist, would perform with the band on Sunday but he did not know if it would be for a song or a full set.
