John Frusciante Biography - Part 2 Childhood and teenager

The guys from Universo Frusciante did an amazing job to make this biography of John Frusciante crafted from stories, facts and quotes from interviews and testimonials.  And I will just to bring it to you in English.

Childhood and teenager

John went to visit his father on holidays and school holidays, but he really loved was California. As another young local John became intimately involved with the punk rock scene in Los Angeles.

John like any kid 9 years liked sports and played baseball. He never imagined that the fact of playing baseball would write his first letter. John for being small and thin was always teased by other boys older and bigger team, usually made him feel cornered. With this situation happening several times, John started going at locations distant from practice, he was alone writing letters like those boys must die. So the first letter of John was named Fuck You To José. José was the coach of the team, then the translation would be something like "I'll fuck with Jose," showing that John wanted to fight with the technical team whole.
Since I was nine years old. The first time I was very angry with a boy, was the last time I did any sport, baseball. And I thought that kid a big idiot. And in the far field I wrote how he had to die. I went home and filled 45 minutes of music on tape. And since then, I've been writing songs, especially in recent times. And spent a notebook in two weeks. And I write everything: film scripts, ideas ... Just what is going through my head: Mathematical, all those things.
John was passionate about The Germs, coming to buy multiple copies of the same album, GI (1979).At age 10, he had taught himself to play most of the songs on the album.

Even at age 10 he got his first guitar, given by her stepfather Lawrence, that although I like classical music, understand the meaning of punk rock and motivates John to become an artist. So the heroes John became Greg Ginn, Black Flag, Pat Smear of The Germs and Joe Strummer and Mick Jones of The Clash. What made John more crazy was the way to play the punk rockers, especially Pat Smear, who mingled down and picks up to a whole new way. That left him amazed.

John also heard nonstop New Wave of B52's and Devo.
The styles that led me to the guitar were the new wave of bands like Devo and the B-52's, and punk as The Germs and Black Flag. These styles do not come from the blues were created from an energy that was in the air in the mid 70s. I want to capture the very best of that feeling, because I believe that one guitar style coming punk and new wave is as bright as the blues, can be created. Is what I'm trying to do nowadays. I spend a lot of time with my guitar playing along with excerpts from Kraftwerk's synthesizers, for example, moves that did not originate in the blues and seek new meanings for notes. For many guitarists, the b3 is always the blues b3, and I want to make the new wave b3.
John was studying at Vista Mar School and the music began to take over a large part of your routine ... He often spent hours studying and going to concerts, having as their first big concert one of AC / DC in Los Angeles. He also began to evolve musically, leaving Germs, for guitar virtuosos like Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. When dominated the blues scale, followed uphill to the progressive rock of Yes, King Crimson, Genesis and Frank Zappa, whose works he would study for hours.
"When I was a teenager, I dedicated myself to learning the music of Frank Zappa. I thought of him as the perfect human being, he could do and say anything, nothing would be wrong. Knew I wanted to be the best guitar player I could be . And I liked to learn the complex songs he had written. I imagined him standing in front of me with their brilliance, I would like to touch on a technical level than I imagined he demanded from his musicians. More something in me calmed me down when I was fifteen or sixteen, was when I trained more than at any other time. Whether you are with a certain amount of pain or confused when you are growing, it is good to have someone who always makes you laugh or smile. When you do not have someone like that, you are left with your own sadness or pain. I always had people like that. few years ago was Martin Gore and Dave Gahan. now, it's Peter Hammill of Van Der Graaff Generator. often think about what the world would be if we did not have these images that match our own subconscious pain and so dismiss them. Such images have kept me happy in the time that could have been very discouraging for me "
John already had a broad taste in music, both listening to music played on the radio as Donna Summer, Elton John, Cat Stevens, the music from underground bands from Los Angeles. He recorded all these songs on the radio and listen to as low as possible in your room at night.

At 15, John attended his first concert of Red Hot Chili Peppers, the "Variety Arts Center" in Los Angeles, changing his life forever ...
"Since then, their music has meant everything to me."
The crazy guys who played in only stockings and sticks that were a mixture of insane funk, punk, psychedelic rock, among other genres and artists that he was totally in love. Did not like the Red Hot Chili Peppers does not become the favorite band of John. He spent all his money going to concerts paying their entry and the entry of his friends, causing them to become fans of RHCP too.

John saw in Hillel Slovak, guitarist for the band, the perfect way to play guitar, he idolized. And going to all the band's shows, he had to know Hillel and the rest of the band, which happened shortly after when the band was playing a show at Perkins Palace in Pasadena. Anthony Kiedis was parking the car to play at the club, John and Bill (friend of John) saw him and were talking with him for a while.

John knew virtually all parts of the guitar and bass first 3 albums Chili Peppers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984) Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987).

At school John was a failure, causing his mother to transfer to a different school from the other. John enrolled at the Musician's Institute of Technology, a famous music school in Los Angeles, he also got a job, giving him independence to live with his friend Bill. It was then that John practiced guitar 15 hours a day. Slept in the morning classes and spent the rest of the day studying alone. So we can say that studying in this school of music did not help John in his development as a musician.
When I was 14 I decided that I was going to find and buy all the albums of Frank Zappa. In 1984, there was a problem since all his albums of the '60s and '70s were out of print. I wanted to catch a bus and run throughout Los Angeles and Valley to get these albums, each of which had a huge effect on me and powerful. Each one, as I was finding, look like the most perfect microcosm of sense to me.Everything about each, the smell, the cover, the booklet and especially the music were pure magic to my mind. I also just started buying their products regularly 818 PUMPKIN, buying materials whenever I had money. This included the "Old Masters box" (which contained remasters of their first 5 albums), the film "Baby Snakes" and a video called "The Dub Room Special". I saw these two videos increasingly, always showing them to anyone who wanted to watch. At the time I was 15, had all the records and was spending about 70% of my musical life studying and learning their music. To me, stop trying to reach perfection, he is known to demand a lot from his players and was a strong motivating force behind the huge amount of exercise I was doing at the time. I taught myself to read music, comparing notes in "The Frank Zappa Guitar Book" for the recordings of these songs. Poly-rhythms that book (brilliantly transcribed by Steve Vai), as well as his instrumental compositions, opened my mind very great. I believe that all this prompted me to open my head, causing me to have endless creative possibilities with every form of music.
At 16, John large school with the permission of their parents and the completion of a proficiency test. Although John did not graduate as a musician at Musician's Institute of Technology in 1987. He was far from a failure [...]
He hated going to school. Music was what he wanted to do and that's what he did. -Father John Frusciante
The judge, who has presided over the court family and household, knew that the best thing to do was not pressing the child.
"I'm not someone who will say to my son that he should do this or that." - Father John Frusciante
That same year, Steve Vai, hitherto unknown and a talented guitarist who was part of the Frank Zappa band, including John who was also a fan, like Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen for their technical, let the musician and was investing in its solo career, is joining the band Whitesnake. Zappa decided to do tests to have a new guitarist. John learned and immediately signed up to compete.
